Schedule of Events


New International Student Summit
Monday, August 20 | 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
UIC Forum, 725 West Roosevelt Road

The New International Student Summit brings all incoming international students together for one exciting day. Information covered during this session includes immigration responsibilities, essential UIC resources, campus programs and involvement opportunities. The day will conclude with a resource fair of UIC departments and organizations. Breakfast and lunch are included.

This event is mandatory* for all incoming international students; please plan your travel accordingly. Online registration is required for participation.

*International students with teaching assistantships (TAs) will be dismissed from the New International Student Summit at the appropriate time and escorted to the Campus-Wide New TA Orientation which also takes place on August 20. Please register for and attend both orientations.

International Student Seminar
Three dates available:
Tuesday, August 14 | 11:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Wednesday, August 15 | 11:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Thursday, August 16 | 11:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Student Center East, 750 South Halsted Street, Illinois Room

Join your fellow incoming international students for a special seminar and networking opportunity. This one-day session will explore U.S. culture, the history of Chicago, and feature a Q&A panel with current UIC student Global Ambassadors. Lunch is included.

This event is strongly encouraged for all incoming international students. Online registration is required for participation; students should select from one of the three available seminar dates.

Housing Resources Workshop
Monday, August 13 | 9:00-10:30 a.m.
Student Center East, 750 South Halsted Street, Illinois Room

One of your first tasks as a new international student will be finding a place to live. This informal session will introduce you to off-campus housing options in the city of Chicago. Participants will learn about the various Chicago neighborhoods, local housing terminology, standard rental/lease agreements and more. Breakfast is included.

This event is optional but online registration is required for participation.

Chicago Trolley Tour
Five dates available:
Tuesday, August 14 | 4:00-6:00 p.m. (departing from SCE)
Wednesday, August 15 | 4:00-6:00 p.m. (departing from SCE)
Thursday, August 16 | 4:00-6:00 p.m. (departing from SCE)
Meet outside Student Center East (SCE), 750 South Halsted Street

Tuesday, August 21 | 2:30-4:30 p.m. (departing from SSB)
Wednesday, August 22 | 2:30-4:30 p.m. (departing from SSB)
Meet outside the Student Services Building (SSB), 1200 West Harrison Street

Experience a guided tour of downtown Chicago from the seat of a classic open-air trolley! Choose the tour date that best fits your schedule and get your camera ready for fantastic photo opportunities. Students may want to register for the trolley tour that corresponds with the date of their chosen International Student Seminar. 

This event is optional but online registration is required for participation; students should select one tour from the five available dates. The deadline to register for this event is Monday, August 6, 2018.

Shopping Trip Shuttle
Friday, August 17 | 9:45 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Meet outside the Student Services Building, 1200 West Harrison Street

Setting up a new life often requires a few new supplies. Join OIS on shopping trip to The Maxwell and Southgate Market, two malls near the UIC campus featuring popular clothing, home goods, and grocery stores. Participants will be able to purchase bedding, kitchen supplies, clothing, groceries and more while exploring an expanding area of downtown Chicago. Shuttle bus transportation will be provided from the UIC campus to the shopping malls and back.

This session is optional but in-person registration is required for participation. Please visit the Office of International Services upon your arrival in Chicago to register.

Global Music Night
Friday, August 17 | 5:00-7:00 p.m.
Student Center East, 750 South Halsted Street, Illinois Room

Enjoy an evening of music, dancing, and food with OIS and other new international students. A local Chicago band will provide live music with a global flair and a dance lesson for those who are interested. An internationally-themed appetizer bar will also be included.

This event is optional but online registration is required for participation. Attendance is “open house” style; feel free to stop by anytime between 5:00-7:00 p.m.

Welcome BBQ for New & Returning International Students
Thursday, August 23 | 5:00-7:00 p.m.
UIC Forum, 725 West Roosevelt Road

Join OIS as we kick off another school year and welcome new international students to the UIC community and returning international students back to campus. Enjoy delicious grilled food and entertainment as you connect with friends, old and new!

This event is optional but online registration is required for participation. Attendance is “open house” style; feel free to stop by anytime between 5:00-7:00 p.m.

 

Registration & Fee Information

Registration is required for all mandatory and optional International Student Orientation events. Please register using the online registration form.

All incoming international students are charged a non-refundable Orientation/Arrival Fee of $149 to their university bill to cover the costs of initial arrival services and programs, regardless of ISO participation. However, there is no additional charge for participation in selected ISO events.


Guest Information

Family and guests are welcome at all International Student Orientation events. There is a $10 per person fee for each ISO event that a guest attends. This Orientation Event Fee will be charged to your university bill at the beginning of your first semester of study. You may register your guests when completing the online registration form.


Countdown to Chicago Pre-Arrival Communications

Countdown to Chicago emails are sent to incoming international students in the weeks prior to their arrival in Chicago. They highlight a variety of pre-arrival preparation topics including International Student Orientation, registering for classes, housing in Chicago, and more.
