Increase in Administrative Processing of U.S. Visa Applications & Renewals Abroad

As of May 25, 2017 U.S. Embassy and Consulates abroad have been conducting enhanced vetting of some immigrant and non-immigrant visa applications and renewals. This measure came in response to the March 6, 2017 Executive Order: Protecting The Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry Into the United States.

Visa applications and renewals selected for this enhanced vetting are placed on what U.S. Embassies and Consulates call, administrative processing. While administrative processing was utilized by consulate officials even before the enhanced vetting measures took effect, the Office of International Services has become aware of an increased number of administrative processing cases, some taking longer than the typical 60 days to resolve. To read the U.S. Department of State’s official information about administrative processing, please visit their website.

Not all visa applications or renewals marked for administrative processing are directly related to the enhanced vetting measures or will take 60 days or more to resolve. However, the Office of International Services feels compelled to make the UIC international community aware of this change to U.S. Embassy and Consulate practice and to prepare individuals applying for or renewing visas abroad for the possibility of longer than usual processing times.

While the staff in the Office of International Services is unable to affect U.S. Embassy or Consulate processes, knowing about any cases of lengthy administrative processing will increase our ability to advocate for the community as a whole. Feel free to contact the Office of International Services with questions.
