Fall 2017 Orientation Schedule

As a new international student at UIC studying a graduate or professional program, you will likely attend a number of orientation sessions hosted by different UIC offices and departments. In general, you can expect to attend:

Orientation sessions hosted by the Office of International Services (OIS)
OIS orientation sessions are tailored specifically for international students. See the schedule posted below for a complete list of mandatory and optional events. Registration for all events is required and can be completed below.

UIC Orientation programs for New Undergraduate Students.

This orientation session will help in your overall transition to life at UIC. During the session you’ll have an opportunity to meet with an academic advisor. It’s advisable for international students to complete their Immigration Check-in prior to attending this orientation session. More information can be found on the UIC Orientation Program website.

Orientation sessions hosted by the UIC Graduate College
The UIC Graduate College hosts an orientation for all incoming graduate students, both international and domestic. More information and registration can be found on the Graduate College website.

Orientation sessions hosted by your individual degree program
Your academic department may host an orientation session for all incoming students in that specific college or degree program. Contact your academic department for more information.

Orientation sessions for students with teaching assistantships
The International Teaching Assistants Program (ITA) holds an orientation for all new and incoming international teaching assistants. More information can be found on the ITA website. Additionally, the Graduate College holds a Campus-Wide New TA Orientation, including international teaching assistants. New and incoming international teaching assistants should attend both the ITA and the Graduate College TA orientations.

Schedule of Events – Fall 2017

 

Shopping Trip Shuttle

Setting up a new life often requires a few new supplies. Join OIS on a shopping trip to The Maxwell, a mall near the UIC campus featuring popular clothing and home goods stores such as TJ Maxx, Nordstrom Rack, Pier 1 Imports, and Burlington Coat Factory. Students will be able to purchase bedding, kitchen supplies, clothing, and more while exploring a new and expanding area of downtown Chicago. Transportation is provided free for international students; family and guests are welcome at an additional cost. This shopping trip is offered on two different dates. Please register for the date that best fits your schedule.

Housing Resources Workshop

Please join us for an informational session on how to find off-campus housing in Chicago. Learn about neighborhoods, housing terminology, rental/leasing agreements and more!

International Graduate Students: Must Know Basics for Success

This one-day session explores crucial knowledge new international graduate students must know to achieve success at UIC. This session is offered on four different dates. Students are required to attend only one so please register for the date that best fits your schedule.

Times: All sessions run from 11:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (Registration & Lunch 11:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.)

Mandatory Event – Registration Required

Bowling Nights

This fun event is an opportunity to meet and socialize with your new international student friends. Experienced and first-time bowlers are encouraged to attend! Bowling shoes and light snacks will be provided. This is a popular event so please register for one bowling night only.

New International Student Orientation

This orientation session brings all new incoming international students together for one exciting day! Information covered during this session includes immigration responsibilities, essential UIC resources, campus programs and involvement opportunities. The day will conclude with a trolley tour of Chicago followed by an evening with dinner and entertainment on-campus. All new international students are expected to attend this event so please plan your travel accordingly.

Time: 8:30 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. (Registration & Breakfast 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.)

Location: UIC Forum, 725 West Roosevelt Road

Mandatory Event – Registration Required

Welcome BBQ for New and Returning International Students

All new and returning international students are invited to an evening of fun and delicious barbeque. The UIC Marching Band and Sparky the Dragon will also be in attendance to help us kick-off the new school year!

Time: 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Location: UIC Forum, 725 West Roosevelt Road

Registration Information

 

Registration is required for all mandatory and optional events. Arriving late or leaving early is not possible. A non-refundable Orientation/Arrival Fee of $149 will be charged to your university bill.
