Check-in with OIS

All new international students who are physically present in the U.S. must complete an Immigration Check-in with OIS in order to fulfill the requirements of U.S. immigration regulations. This process should be completed shortly after your arrival to the U.S. but no later than 30 days after the program start date listed on your I-20 or DS-2019. The check-in process is conducted virtually and no in-person visit to OIS is required.

Virtual Immigration Check-in for new UIC international students physically in the U.S.

  1. Gather your immigration documents and create digital images of each document (.pdf, .jpeg, .img and .png are all acceptable formats):
    1. Signed I-20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1) for study at UIC (F-1 or J-1 status only)
    2. Passport Biographic and Expiry Page
    3. Passport Visa Stamp or I-797
    4. I-94 Record (download here: https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/home)
    5. I-901 SEVIS Fee Receipt (F-1 or J-1 status only)
    6. Proof of Health Insurance (J-1 status only)
  2. Access the myOIS portal using your UIC NetID and password to log into the Full Client Services for Students and Scholars. Locate and complete the New Student Immigration Check-In E-Form. If you are unable to access the myOIS portal, please send an email to ois@uic.edu. If you have dependents who entered the U.S. with you in F-2 status, please complete the Dependent Check-in E-Form and upload your dependent documents.
  3. Click on the New Student Check-In link on the left side of the page.
  4. Follow all instructions and submit your check-in e-form.
  5. If your e-form is submitted and accepted successfully, you will receive a confirmation of this via email.
  6. If your form is not accepted and requries follow-up, you will receive an email from an OIS Advisor. Please read and respond to any emails you receive from OIS.

If your SEVIS registration hold has not already been removed, we will remove it as part of this check-in process. This will allow you to register for classes. You must be registered for full-time in your first semester of your program, including summer. Again, the Immigration Check-in with OIS should only be completed by new international students who are physically present in the U.S.

For students with immigration documents sponsored by UIC, failure to check-in within 30 days of the start of classes will result in termination of your nonimmigrant status.

Medical Insurance Policy Requirements for J-1 Students

In addition to Campus Care, J-1 Exchange Visitors (students) and their J-2 dependents must have health insurance that meets the minimum requirements as defined by the U.S. Department of State, at all times during the J program. Most J-1 students will need to purchase supplemental insurance to include medical evacuation and repatriation. Please see the J-1 insurance section of our website for additional information. Proof of insurance will need to be provided to OIS upon Check-in.
