International Student Career Month

 

The Office of International Services, in conjunction with the Office of Career Services, would like to invite you to the 2014 International Student Career Month. The following list of workshops are designed to help international students navigate the world of finding employment. Whether you are a student looking for an internship or are about the graduate and are looking for a post-graduation job, these workshops will cover the basics of resume and cover letter writing to interview skills and navigating the U.S. immigration system. The month features internship and job fairs that are designed for you to meet potential employers. For some of the events, we ask that you reserve a place by sending an email to ois@uic.edu. Get potential employers to notice you! Attend this workshop and learn what American employers look for in your written application. Not sure if your resume reflects your experience? Confused on how to translate your international experience to the US? Have your questions answered while learning how to write a winning resume! Optional Practical Training (OPT) Workshop

The Office of International Services conducts mandatory workshops for F-1 international students interested in applying for Optional Practical Training (OPT) throughout the semester. Students applying for OPT must first attend one of these workshops. There, you will learn about the OPT application process, maintaining your visa status, and other important procedures.

Part-Time and Internship Career Fair

Open to ALL majors with nearly 50 employers expected!

Off-campus employers will be recruiting for part-time and internship positions and some will also be recruiting for full - time positions. Dress professionally and bring plenty of resumes.


Curricular Practical Training (CPT) Workshop

 

Friday, February 14, 2014 - 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

This session prepares students for the Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and covers several topics, including: appropriate uses for CPT, the application process, and maintaining status.

Life After F-1/J-1

 

Wednesday, February 19, 2014 - Time 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
James Stukel Towers Theatre Room

This workshop presents useful information to students on the various visa types they may be eligible for once they have completed their studies at UIC, including H-1B, O-1, and Legal Permanent Residency. Students will learn how to advocate for themselves in the interview process to ensure that their rights as applicants are respected.

Interview Essentials

Commuter Student Resource Center (SCE, enter Inner Circle, then walk through Wellness Center)

It's natural to feel the nerves in a high-stakes situation like interviewing. Attend this session to learn tools and techniques for interviewing success! Common interview questions will be discussed with strategies for answering well, especially those tricky curve-ball questions.

The Do's and Don'ts in the U.S. Workplace

This session will cover how many people working in the United States conduct themselves in a work setting and the common expectations of most U.S. employers. Special topics will be discussed, including: ethics and compliance, sexual harassment laws, and common forms of communication between co-workers and supervisors.

Career Panel & Networking

Networking is an important part in helping you land the perfect job! Meet and receive advice from former international students that have experienced employment success in the United States as well as hear the perspective of recruiters on what they look for in international candidates through the job application process. Joins us as they share their stories, career paths and answer your questions. A panel discussion will kick off the workshop with a fun networking session with refreshments to follow.
