OIS Activities Calendar
Fall 2009 through Spring 2010
This calendar covers programs and events organized by the Office of International Services (OIS) for Fall of 2009 through Spring of 2010, and some international and U.S. holidays.
August
8/20 OIS New International Student Orientation. F-1 and J-1 international students are encouraged to attend. Issues ranging from cultural adjustment to immigration and SEVIS regulations will be discussed. Orientation will be concluded with a trolley tour and a Welcome dinner! (Limited to New International Students at UIC.) *
8/22 Gurnee Mills Shopping Trip. OIS is sponsoring a trip to Gurnee Mills Discount Outlet Mall. This is a perfect time to purchase a winter coat and other items that you will need for your apartment. *
September
9/7 Labor Day. There will be no classes on this day.
October
10/24 Pumpkin Picking. Halloween is celebrated each year on October 31 and a favorite tradition for this holiday is to carve pumpkins. Join the OIS to a visit to a pumpkin farm and you’ll be ready for the holiday! *
November
11/16-11/20 International Education Week. International Education Week is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. The OIS will have games and events to support this important occasion.
11/26 Thanksgiving. In the U.S., Thanksgiving is traditionally spent with family and friends. There will be no classes on November 26-27.
December
12/07-12/11 FINAL EXAMS
January

1/18 Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The U.S. celebrates the birth and life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who strived for equality of all people. No classes on this day.
February
2/11 OIS Coffee Hour. Take a break from studying and join other UIC internationals and the OIS staff with refreshing drinks and delectable treats!
2/14 Chinese New Year. This is the year of the Tiger. Those born in the year of the tiger are sensitive and capable of great sympathy!
March
3/10 Chicago Board of Trade Tour. This is your chance to see the inner workings of the Chicago Board of Trade, established in 1848! Normally closed to the public, OIS is offering an exclusive look into our local economic hub. *
3/17 St. Patrick's Day. Chicago's Irish population honors the patron saint of Ireland with a popular parade, and by dying the Chicago River green!
April
4/22 End of the Year Coffee Hour. Come join The Office of International Services in honoring our graduating international students and leaving scholars, and to enjoy a good cup of coffee and desserts!
