Possible Delay in Visa Issuance for International Students, Faculty, and Staff

The Office of International Services would like to inform the UIC community of possible delays in visa issuance at U.S. Embassies or Consulates abroad for students, faculty, or staff that require nonimmigrant visas (F-1, J-1, H-1B, O-1, etc.) due to recent outages in the U.S. Department of State’s Consular Consolidated Database.

This outage has affected operations at an unspecified number of posts abroad. A major media report cited that 50,000 applications were affected in one country alone. With the summer months being a peak time for tourist travel to the U.S. as well as incoming college students, faculty, and staff, this outage may impact the arrival dates of these UIC-sponsored individuals. Students will continue to receive priority in visa processing due to their time sensitive travel with the start of the upcoming semester.

The Office of International Services will work with any affected students, faculty, staff, and their departments to ensure the smoothest transition possible given these delays. We will also host make-up orientations for students that are unable to attend our sessions scheduled for mid-August. We will keep you informed of any updates to this situation.
